In the spotlight as the main attraction, in the orchestral pit as part of a symphony—whatever the many roles a violin may take—the human ear takes special notice of the range and the quality of sound produced by this instrument, making the violin an indispensible to many composers and genres across history.
For many reasons, the violin has an elite reputation, and many think it’s difficult to learn. At Mi Fa Music & Art School, we believe that everyone can learn to play this instrument. From day one, your violin teacher will guide you through the challenges this instrument poses to beginners (such as correct posture, accurate intonation, and bowing technique) to ensure that you build upon good habits from the very beginning. With the right road map, you’re on your way to making your violin sing.
About the Celtic Ensemble:
The Celtic Ensemble is the largest program in the Lower Mainland and the only one on the North Shore that focuses on folk and fiddle music. We encourage youth to excel in music while creating connections in the community.
For over 25 years, we’ve been more than just a music academy for young people. Our mission is to bring music to life in everything we do. Our ensembles perform regularly at community events, concert halls, and even on tour. We create original pieces inspired by Celtic, classical, jazz, and folk music, and we reach out to new audiences, especially those from vulnerable communities, to share the joy of music with them.
High skill threshold: Violinists enjoy the reputation of being among the most skilled musicians out there. This is because the violin requires a highly-developed musical ear, a keen musical intuition, and refined motor skills and physical control. Training as a violinist ensures a firm, well-rounded musical education.
In demand: Many violinists play and work within the world of classical music, but the violin is greatly valued in other genres of music, as well. Because the instrument is so versatile, the violinist has no shortage of options when it comes to where to play.
Team player: The violin is beautiful alone but shines when played in an ensemble. There are many contexts where the violin is a perfect fit, and it’s thrilling to hear your instrument within the larger whole of a band, a string quartet, or other types of ensembles.
A classic choice: The violin’s repertoire is primarily classical. For those who want training in the classical world, the violin is an ideal choice, especially for preparing for and participating in the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Immensely satisfying: It’s true that the violin challenges the beginning musician. With your instructor at Mi Fa, however, overcoming these challenges give even greater rewards. When you hit that pitch that’s been avoiding you, perfect your vibrato, or nail that bowing technique, you’ll see how far you’ve come.
Because physical posture and manual technique is so important for the violin, it’s common to recommend early education for this instrument. For children 5 and younger, we recommend enrolment in our Kids Music Class. Students older than 5 are usually ready to begin one-on-one violin instruction.

We encourage students to practice and perform together, and for string players this kind of practice is beneficial. School recitals are an opportunity for you to present your work and progress to an appreciative audience.
